Why do I get an "improper installation" error message upon starting TerraStation?

The most commonly encountered reasons for this are:

a) You have recently reformatted your hard drive. This may change the ID2 number used by our security file.

b) You have replaced or removed your Ethernet card. This will change the ID1 number used by our security file.

c) The security file cannot be found. On non-network installations, it should be in your "C:\Program Files\TerraStation\sitedata" directory and must be called tsfoba.v70. On 64-bit operating systems look in the directory "C:\Program Files (x86)\TerraStation\sitedata".

d) You are using a security file intended for a different computer.

e) On a PC, you may be trying to use Windows 3.1 or Windows 95. You cannot. TerraStation must be running on Windows 98, 2000, XP, NT , Vista or Windows 7, 8, or 10.

g) If you are having problems with the security access of the software, please contact your TERRASCIENCES support office for assistance.

My license is about to expire. What should I do?

This is mainly an issue for those clients who rent the TerraStation system. You will be warned several days in advance if your license is about to expire. Assuming you still have a valid license agreement, you can email your license file to us for renewal. On non-network systems, this file is normally located in the following folder: C:\Program Files\TerraStation\sitedata.

The file is called tsfoba.v70. Use Windows Explorer to locate it. Email this file to

If you are a legitimate user, then a replacement license file will be sent back to you, and you simply copy it into the same location in which the old file was located.

Network license files will be located in a similar folder location, but on the server machine. Client installations will not likely have the appropriate access to this machine, so you should see your System Administrator and have them contact us with the license file.

Why is my project not accessible from the list of available projects?

There are a few of possibilities that can cause this:

The project has been moved to a different location and the change in location has not been made in the project registry file. Check the contents of the tsproj.lst file by pressing the Edit button on the main menu bar, followed by the ASCII File Editing option on the menu. Click once on the top line in the table that has tsproj.lst in the FILENAME column. Verify that the directory path and project name are correct.

The project has been deleted manually from the hard drive, and the entry in the tsproj.lst file is still there.

What is the significance of different colored well symbols on a map?

In general, if a map spot is red, then it does not have the data being looked for. If it is green then the data is available. For example, when you are creating a cross section in Correlation, the green wells are those that have log data available. When you are posting a map in Mapping, the green wells are those which have a value for the currently selected top (Z variable).

Where do I load a LAS curve file into my project?

LAS and all other well log input is done in the Input/Output > Well Import option. This is available from the main TerraStation menu bar.

How can I interrupt or disable redraws when zooming, etc.?

In many cases you can click the ESC (escape) key during a redraw and the drawing is stopped, returning control to you. Alternatively, clicking ALT and F2, simultaneously, turns off redraw events until they are explicitly turned back on (another ALT and F2). While redraws are turned off you can manually redraw the screen using the F2 key. This is useful for the times you are using the large vertical and horizontal sliders to change the scales on a cross section or a map.

How do I change the background color of a graphics display?

You can change this color, and several other color settings, by clicking on the Edit option on the main TerraStation menu bar. Choose Preferences , then Graphics Colors from the menu that appears. To change the background color, click on the Background button. Select the desired color from the color palette that is presented. To make the change permanent, do not forget to click the Make Default button before exiting.

How do I change a well from feet to meters or vice versa?

This can be easily done by using the Project_Database > Well Data Management option. Simply right click on your well (or a group of wells) and select Convert feet/mtrs from the menu.

How can I find out which well is in which project well file?

The easiest way is to use the Project Database > Integrity option. This will show you each well file that has been created by filename and the well name of the well.

You can also use the Project Database > Well Data Management option. This allows you to perform varous taks on your wells, including deleting them from the project.

How do I change the total depth interval of a well?

This is done using the Expand/Contract Depth Interval operation. Use the Project_Database > Well Data Mangement option from the main TerraStation menu bar. Right click on the well you want to modify and select Expand/Contract Depth Interval from the menu. Set the desired new top and bottom of well depths in the text boxes provided. Click Accept .

Depending on how many curves are in the well file, this can take a little bit of time.

Note: Always change the top and bottom depths so that you are using the exact depth increment of the current well file. That is if your depth increment is 0.5, and the previous Top depth is 1000.0, do not set the new depth to 500.23433 for example. Set it to 500.0 or 500.5.

How do I get Township-Range-Section lines on maps?

This is a question only relevant to onshore US and Canada projects. In addition, the project MUST have been created as a Latitude/Longitude project, not using User-defined coordinates.

1. First, click on Input/Output on the main menu bar.

2. Select Public Land Survey from the menu.

3. If this is your first time in here, from the Options menu, click the Create/Reset TerraTran Files option. This creates a set of control files that conforms to the theoretical specifications of the public land survey.

4. From the Options menu, click the Select Data Window option.

5. Choose how you wish to specify the data window by setting the toggle to the desired setting.

6. Click Select Meridian and choose your desired meridian from the list. This will display a representation of the survey for that meridian.

7. Fill in the four boxes with the boundaries for your window.

8. Click Accept .

This has created the relevant information for your project. You only need to do this once for the project. To display the lines on maps we need to set the base map settings for this. Do the following:

1. Click the Mapping option on the main menu bar

2. Press the Base Map button on the power bar of the window.

3. On the window that appears, press the Geopolitical tab, and set the options in the Public Land Survey part of the window to your desired settings.

4. Click on Apply to cause the map to re-display.

Note: This option is to be found on most map displays on the power bar.

Note: In order to do this, you must have created a map with at least one valid well location on it.

I cannot delete curves in my well. Why?

It is probably because the curve 'readonly' flag is switched on. To switch it off, do a Status , then right click on the curve and select Curve Properties . Uncheck the Read Only check box on the General tab of the window that appears.

Why can't I add picks to wells in Correlation?

It is possible that you have at sometime in the past, set the Protect Picks check box to on for the affected well (or wells). You can access this check box by creating a Wells for Panel display with the wells affected. Then select the Log Specs button on the power bar and look for the Protect Picks checkbox towards the top of the panel. If there is a tick mark in the box, switch it off. This will allow you to then edit/add/delete any picks for this well.

Where do I load core analysis data?

Do this from the Input/Output > Well Import > Core Analysis Data option. It is easiest to load files that are comma seperated. The data ends up in the .COR auxiliary well file, stored at the true core depths, and can be used in crossplots and other displays along side regular curve data.

My curve names are being displayed with more than just the mnemonic. How do I change this?

The way that curve names are displayed is controlled by a Preferences setting. Use the Edit > Preferences > Miscellaneous option form the main menu bar of TerraStation. Change the Curve Label Style toggle to the desired setting. Press Apply . You will need to exit and re-enter TerraStation for the change to take effect.

If you are concerned about this specifically in IMAGELog curve track headers, then you can use the Track Configuration - Header Attributes tab controls to set the display attributes on a track by track basis.

How do I access the online help documentation?

You can do this by simply pressing the F1 key at any time. The on-line help viewer will be triggered with the document for the module you are currently using. Alternatively, you can select Help from the options along the top of the window, and then select Context Help from the menu.

How do I delete curves from a well?

You can do this from any 'Status' display. Simply right-click on the curve in question and select Delete Curve from the small menu that appears. 'Status' is available in a number of places including the power bar area of IMAGELog and the Petrophysics module. If the curve is set as read-only, this option may not be available and you will have to set the curve to be non read-only first.

How do i use different templates in my section?

Do this by right clicking on a well in the cross section display and choosing Select Well Template from the menu that appears. You can do this on each well as desired.
